If you think you have been a victim of a cyber crime:

  • Do not turn it off and back on again! Disconnect the power on a PC or hold the power button down for 30 seconds on a laptop, leave the device powered off.
  • Document everything: Use pen and paper to note down when and who you talk to. Use known contact numbers, not those from pop-ups or emails.
  • Contact your bank: Inform them if money, cards, ID, or online banking access might be affected.
  • File a police report: Your bank may require this. Start collecting evidence immediately.
  • Report to the FBI: File an <<Internet Crime Complaint (IC3)>>. You might not hear back, but your information helps in the global fight. The FBI sometimes provides decryption keys after taking down cybercrime gangs.
  • Handle your computer carefully: Depending on the attack, your computer may need to be imaged before being turned on again or disconnected from the network. Seek advice from local police, the FBI, or an IT consultant.
  • Prevent the spread: If the attack could spread to your contacts, consult a business advisor, IT consultant, or online resources on how to inform potential victims.
  • Print the CISA Complaint Tip Card: Keep <<the card>> with your important numbers.
